“Attributes of Love” Series Introduction: 1 John 4:8 tells us that “God is love”, and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 lists the attributes of love. So in this series, we’re going to discuss each of the attributes in those verses, one by one, to learn more about the nature of God.
God Is Patient
Psalm 103:8The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Isaiah 30:18Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you…
2 Peter 3:9The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:15And count the patience of our Lord as salvation…
God is patient. Ever since He set time in motion, He has been working to create exactly the result He desires. Ever since sin came into His creation, He has been calling us back to Himself. He wants each of us – all of us. He will chase after us. He will call out to us. But He won’t force us. He will keep trying. He will wait as long as it takes.
You might look around our fallen, broken, messed up world and ask “Why do you let this go on, God?” Because He is patient. He doesn’t just LOVE us, He IS love, and love is patient. He can’t help but be patient with us because it is in His very nature. He isn’t just performing an act of patience, but He actually is that patient.
I’m not that patient. I think He should have called us home by now.
I’m not that patient. I would rather do 50 things myself than wait for someone else to do them.
I’m not that patient. I’ll start doing something else when my spouse is telling me about something, instead of giving him my full attention. I have snapped at my kids, and my dogs, when they were dawdling. I have sighed or looked around or tapped my foot when I thought the grocery line was taking too long. I’ve rolled my eyes to my coworker when my boss was longwinded. I’ve checked the clock when the sermon went too long.
I’m not that patient. But I am glad God is that patient with us.
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…
Lord, help me to grow closer to you, to have more of your spirit in me. Help me to love better. Help me to be patient with those around me, and with myself, so that I can be more like you.
